Application Process
Guitar
Applicants will be asked to submit a visual audition, unedited, in NTSC format on DVD with clear audio of their playing. The camera should not be stopped between pieces. Competitors should also include a résumé of musical experience and a color or black-and-white photograph. Audio alone is not acceptable.
The audition (not to exceed 30 minutes) must include all of the following selections in addition to free-choice pieces:
J.S. Bach's "Fugue" (BMW 1001) from Christopher Parkening - Solo Pieces, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00690939 (to be published later this year; for a pdf version, please contact Mr. Parkening's assistant, Sharon, at music52@earthlink.net) (approximate time 5 minutes)
Joaquin Rodrigo's "Fandango" from Tres piezas españolas, Schott & Co. Ltd., London (Associated Music Publishers, Inc., New York) (approximate time 4 minutes)
Enrique Granados' "La Maja de Goya" from Christopher Parkening - Duets & Concertos, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00690938 (to be published later this year; for a pdf version, please contact Mr. Parkening's assistant, Sharon, at music52@earthlink.net) (approximate time 5 minutes)
The application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, February 9, 2009. Fifteen competitors will be chosen from among the applicants. Competitors will be notified on March 23, 2009. Audition materials will not be returned.
Age Requirements
Applicants to the Parkening International Guitar Competition must have been born on or after January 1, 1979.
Prize Money
* Gold Medal: The Stotsenberg Prize of US$30,000
* Silver Medal: US$12,500
* Bronze Medal: US$7,500
* Fourth Prize: US$1,000
* Fifth Prize: US$1,000
* An award of US$500 to each of the remaining 10 contestants.
