Application Process

Guitar

Applicants will be asked to submit a visual audition, unedited, in NTSC format on DVD with clear audio of their playing. The camera should not be stopped between pieces. Competitors should also include a résumé of musical experience and a color or black-and-white photograph. Audio alone is not acceptable.

The audition (not to exceed 30 minutes) must include all of the following selections in addition to free-choice pieces:

J.S. Bach's "Fugue" (BMW 1001) from Christopher Parkening - Solo Pieces, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00690939 (to be published later this year; for a pdf version, please contact Mr. Parkening's assistant, Sharon, at music52@earthlink.net) (approximate time 5 minutes)

Joaquin Rodrigo's "Fandango" from Tres piezas españolas, Schott & Co. Ltd., London (Associated Music Publishers, Inc., New York) (approximate time 4 minutes)

Enrique Granados' "La Maja de Goya" from Christopher Parkening - Duets & Concertos, Hal Leonard Corporation, HL00690938 (to be published later this year; for a pdf version, please contact Mr. Parkening's assistant, Sharon, at music52@earthlink.net) (approximate time 5 minutes)

The application deadline is 5 p.m. Monday, February 9, 2009. Fifteen competitors will be chosen from among the applicants. Competitors will be notified on March 23, 2009. Audition materials will not be returned.
Age Requirements
Applicants to the Parkening International Guitar Competition must have been born on or after January 1, 1979.

Prize Money

* Gold Medal: The Stotsenberg Prize of US$30,000
* Silver Medal: US$12,500
* Bronze Medal: US$7,500
* Fourth Prize: US$1,000
* Fifth Prize: US$1,000
* An award of US$500 to each of the remaining 10 contestants.

Es un placer publicar esta noticia sobre el concurso parkening de guitarra que tiene lugar cada cuatro años en la universidad de Pepperdine, en Malibu, California (Estados Unidos).

Se acaba de publicar la lista de seleccionados y me es muy grato informarles que nuestro Rafael Aguirre ha sido seleccionado!

Un enhorabuena para Rafa y los mejores éxitos.

El concurso se realizara entre el 26 y el 30 de Mayo de este Anho y es, como muchos ya sabran el de mayores premios en la historia de la guitarra hasta este momento con $30,000 (si, Treintamil Dolares) al primer puesto.

The Judges

Representing different areas of the classical music world, the five judges for the second triennial Parkening International Guitar Competition, to be held at Pepperdine University in Malibu, CA, from Thursday, May 28, to Saturday, May 30, 2009, are Nancy Allen, principal harpist with the New York Philharmonic; Manuel Barrueco, world-famous guitar virtuoso; Stephanie L. Challener, publisher of Musical America Worldwide; Thomas Frost, Grammy Award-winning record producer; and Costa Pilavachi, former president of EMI Classics.

La categoria de los jurados es de especial atencion, entre los que se incluye Thomas Frost, el famoso productor de los discos de Vladimir Horowitz, Hillary Hahn, Yoyo Ma, etc. Realmente todo un logro para la guitarra el tener a alguien asi juzgando a los nuevos talentos.

The Gold Medal winner is Emanuele Buono, 21, of Italy. The Silver Medal went to Ian Watt, 18, of Scotland, and the Bronze to Juuso Nieminen, 29, of Finland
